Very little is known about the prophet Hosea. His name means "Salvation is of the Lord". He lived in the Northern Kingdom of Israel around 740–725 BC, which would probably make him a contemporary of Jonah, Isaiah and Micah.

During the time of Hosea, Israel falls from the glory days of King Jeroboam II to the days of internal political chaos and external invasion from Assyria.

Hosea is commanded by God to marry the prostitute Gomer, and then compares his marriage to the marriage between God and Israel.
